Faith vs. Love

                                                      Faith vs. Love
If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 1 Corinthians 13:2

Can you imagine having enough faith to move a mountain and being told that you are nothing? Wait, let’s back up… can you imagine having enough faith to move a mountain?! That alone baffles me! Then to top it off having someone tell you, “Okay, you can move a mountain with your faith, so what. You don’t have love, you are still nothing.”

Let’s look at it another way… let’s say that I had enough faith to move a mountain, but no love. What would I do with my faith? Would I look at all the people scoffing at God and be tempted to drop the mountain on them? 1 Corinthians tells us that love is patient and kind, it doesn’t envy or boast, it isn’t proud, rude, or self-seeking. It tells us that it keeps no record of wrongs and it isn’t easily angered. It goes on to say that it doesn’t delight in evil, but rejoices in truth… and the list continues.

Faith that can move mountains without those characteristics would be scary to me. It very possibly could lead someone to drop a mountain on someone else, or maybe even fly a plane full of people into a building. The bottom line: faith by itself isn’t enough. We have to learn to love others as Jesus loves us. We have to live out our faith through love.

Jesus didn’t walk around boasting about being the Son of God. He went around telling others about God’s amazing love for them. We are all sinners and should never look past that, but that doesn’t mean that we should condemn the world. For God did not send His son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. (John 3:17)
